Esomeprazole (Nexium®) is not recommended for use within NHS Scotland for the healing of gastric ulcers associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) therapy.
In the treatment of gastric ulcers associated with NSAID therapy, esomeprazole produced greater healing rates than a histamine-H2 antagonist. However, there are no comparisons of esomeprazole with other proton pump inhibitors for this indication. The economic case has not been demonstrated.
