Review of health technology assessment advice for COVID-19 medicines
SMC currently has advice for the following medicines to treat COVID-19:
- nirmatrelvir and ritonavir (Paxlovid) SMC2557
- tocilizumab (RoActemra) SMC2552
- molnupiravir (Lagevrio) SMC2556
- remdesivir (Veklury) SMC2550
- tixagevimab and cilgavimab (Evusheld) SMC2558
This advice was produced following a collaboration with NICE where SMC had direct input into the decision-making committee that produced these technology appraisal guidance documents. The advice has the same status for health board consideration as other SMC advice on new medicines.
NICE has launched a consultation to consider whether the medicines recommended for treating COVID-19 in TA878, TA1056 and TA971 remain a clinically and cost-effective use of NHS resources.
The proposal is open for consultation until 5pm on 24 September 2026. Anyone with an interest in this topic is encouraged to visit the NICE website to access the review proposal and to comment: https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ta1056/consultation/html-content-11 Responses can be made individually or on behalf of an organisation.
